Real Madrid will reportedly look to sign 27-year-old Argentine international Cristian Romero from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Cristian Romero is the subject of interest from Real Madrid. The Spanish giants are keen on reinforcing their defensive unit by signing another centre-back in the summer transfer window, despite landing Dean Huijsen a few weeks ago. So, the 27-year-old Tottenham Hotspur defender has emerged as a target for Los Blancos.
The Merengues are weighing up a bid to sign the Cordoba native, and they are ready to submit a proposal worth €80 million to convince Tottenham to part ways with him in the summer transfer window. Meanwhile, Real Madrid may face stiff competition from Atletico Madrid for Romero’s signature.
Cristian Romero and his rise at Tottenham
Cristian Romero has come leaps and bounds since joining Tottenham Hotspur from Atalanta. The North London outfit initially signed the 27-year-old on loan for the 2021/22 season before completing a permanent move in August 2022. He has been a mainstay at the back for his club and country, enjoying success by winning multiple trophies in the last few years.
The Argentine international helped Tottenham win the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League and lifted the FIFA Club World Cup in 2022 while winning the last two Copa America editions. However, Romero faces an uncertain future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium amid his links with several La Liga giants. Real Madrid will be among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the summer transfer window.
La Liga move on the horizon?
Cristian Romero has been on Real Madrid’s radar for a long time. The continued interest makes sense, considering David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger are on the wrong side of 30. In addition, Eder Militao’s long-term fitness situation is uncertain after his two long-term knee injuries in the last two seasons.
So, while Dean Huijsen has joined Real Madrid this summer, Los Blancos should sign another centre-back in the coming weeks. Romero is thus a viable target for Real Madrid, with the Spanish outfit ready to submit a bid worth €80 million to sign him from Tottenham Hotspur.
Meanwhile, widespread reports have linked Romero with Atletico Madrid. However, a move to Estadio Metropolitano may not see the light of day. So, it will be interesting to see if Real Madrid can succeed with a bid worth €80 million to sign the 27-year-old Argentine international from Tottenham Hotspur.
