Arsenal considering Rafael Leao as backup option to bolster attack

Arsenal will reportedly pursue 25-year-old AC Milan attacker Rafael Leao if they fail to land their top targets in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Italian outlet Calciomercato, Rafael Leao is the subject of interest from Arsenal. The Gunners are keen on reinforcing their offensive unit by signing a wide attacker heading into the summer transfer window. So, the AC Milan forward has emerged as a target for the North London club.

However, the former LOSC Lille attacker is not a priority target for Arsenal, and they will not launch the offensive to secure his services until they fail to land the top candidates on their wishlist. Meanwhile, Leao is also a target for Bayern Munich, Chelsea, and Saudi Pro League clubs.

The Rafael Leao lore

Rafael Leao has seen his stock skyrocket since joining AC Milan from LOSC Lille in August 2019. The 25-year-old did not take long to establish himself as a pivotal figure for the Serie A club, and he has come leaps and bounds in the last half a dozen years. However, the player was not as consistent as he would have liked in the 2024/25 season, which reflected in Milan’s misery.

Leao contributed to 25 goals in 50 appearances across all competitions, finding the back of the net 12 times and providing 13 assists. Meanwhile, the Portuguese international remains a hot property in the market, with several well-known clubs across Europe, including Arsenal and Chelsea, setting their sights on him.

London calling?

Chelsea’s interest in Rafael Leao is understandable. The West London club may not complete a permanent deal for Jadon Sancho, while Mykhailo Mudryk faces an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge. So, the AC Milan attacker has emerged as a viable target for Chelsea.

As for Arsenal, the Gunners are keen on reinforcing their offensive unit in the summer transfer window to reduce their over-dependence on Bukayo Saka in the final third. So, Leao is an option worth considering for the North London club. However, he is not a top target for Arsenal.

The Gunners will not launch the offensive to sign the 25-year-old Portuguese international unless they fail to land their top targets. So, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, and Saudi Pro League outfits may have a window of opportunity to beat Arsenal to his signature.
