Pep Guardiola desperately wanted Declan Rice two summers ago as Manchester City went toe to toe with Arsenal for England international. While they failed in that particular race, the Catalan boss has not managed to find a player in his ilk to partner up with Rodri in his midfield.
The idea behind the chase was to bring in a player who would bring the required energy in all boxes, defend the ball well and attack with conviction. There are very few players in that profile of midfielders with Joshua Kimmich being one and Federico Valverde another.

Liverpool are also interested in him, while a host of other top clubs will enter the conversation at the slightest of indication about Real Madrid’s willingness to sell him.
As Manchester City are reportedly expected to enquire in some way, the probability of Florentino Perez sanctioning a sale are remote to none. The Real Madrid supremo considers the 26-year-old an indispensable part of the team, and will not sanction a sale, as the only way to get his attention over the midfielder is by making an exorbitantly large offer.

Manchester City may not be able to sign Valverde ahead of the summer, although they are inclined to bring in a new midfielder in the close season. Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Larsson is a big target for Guardiola, with the Swede not expected to cost an exorbitant amount of money.
Torino midfielder Samuele Ricci is also high on their list, which shows that Manchester City are eager to bring in a specific type of midfielder who dominates all boxes. As for Valverde, there’s no chance for Manchester City to sign him, as the 26-year-old Real Madrid mainstay will also lean towards staying at the Santiago Bernabeu.
