Arne Slot’s Liverpool are looking to make a move for the services of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
Frenkie de Jong’s future has become a big talking point as his role at Barcelona has diminished since the arrival of Hansi Flick. While he remains an important part of their plans, the Dutch international has had limited game time so far and could be on his way out, as reaching an agreement on a new deal may prove difficult.
According to a report from TodoFichajes via Fichajes, Liverpool are keen on his signature and they are plotting a raid on the Catalan giants to acquire his services ahead of next season.
Barcelona forked out a massive €75 million to sign the Dutch midfielder in the summer of 2019 from Ajax. He has been a key figure in the Spanish club over the years but things haven’t been that great for him of late. He has struggled with injuries and hasn’t really been a regular starter under Flick.
His role in the team is expected to increase as we head into the business end of the season. Despite the lack of game time, he is still considered to be one of the most important players in their squad. But, with his contract running out in 2026, his future at the club remains up in the air.
The Spanish club are ready to offer him a new deal but both parties are not on the same page in terms of the finances involved. Barcelona want to make adjustments to his lofty wages as they struggle to balance their books. They want to lower his salary but the player is not ready to accept it.
Liverpool looking to lure De Jong to Anfield
The lack of agreement between the player and the club has put the 27-year-old’s continuity in doubt. Liverpool are the ones who are keeping a close eye on the player’s situation and they could look to make the most out of it.
The Reds were after the signature of Martin Zubimendi last summer. Despite all their efforts, they could land him at the club. Their search for more quality in midfield continues and they could at De Jong as an ideal alternative.
He could be a great addition to Arne Slot’s team and they are willing to table an offer worth €35 million to sign him ahead of next season. While it is a significantly lower fee than the one the Spanish club paid to sign him, the Reds are hoping they could strike a deal for a bargain fee because of the player’s contract situation and Barcelona’s financial struggles.
