Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United vying for Joao Gomes

Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester United are reportedly keen on signing 23-year-old Brazilian prospect Joao Gomes from Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers.

According to a report by The Sun, Joao Gomes has piqued the attention of several high-profile Premier League clubs with his exploits for Wolverhampton Wanderers. Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester United are the Brazilian midfielder’s prospective suitors, although a mid-season deal will unlikely see the light of day.

Joao Gomes and his rise

Joao Gomes has established himself as one of the best young prospects in the Premier League since joining Wolverhampton Wanderers from Flamengo in January 2023. A native of Rio de Janeiro, the South American midfielder spent his formative years in his hometown and graduated from the youth division at Flamengo.

The 23-year-old has gone from strength to strength in the last 18 months, establishing himself as a mainstay in the middle of the park for the Black Country outfit. Gomes has turned out 69 times thus far for Wolverhampton Wanderers while chipping in with five goals and two assists. Meanwhile, the youngster’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of Premier League bigwigs like Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester United.

A man in demand

The three clubs also mulled over signing the Brazilian international in the summer transfer window before the deal failed to see the light of day. Arsenal can do with a midfielder like Gomes amid uncertainties surrounding the long-term futures of Thomas Partey and Jorginho.

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s interest in Joao Gomes makes sense. Arne Slot wants more options for his squad’s midfield unit, even though Ryan Gravenberch has been a revelation this season. So, several candidates, including Joshua Kimmich, have emerged on Liverpool’s radar. However, Gomes is also an option worth considering.

As for Manchester United, Casemiro and Christian Eriksen face an uncertain future at Old Trafford. So, the Red Devils need to sign at least one midfielder in the summer transfer window, with Gomes emerging as a viable target.

Meanwhile, Wolverhampton Wanderers are eager to tie the 23-year-old Brazilian international to a new contract. In addition, a mid-season deal will unlikely see the light of day, considering Gomes’s importance to Vitor Pereira’s team.
