Tottenham eyeing Omar Alderete swoop

Tottenham Hotspur will reportedly look to sign 27-year-old Paraguayan defender Omar Alderete from La Liga club Getafe next year.

According to a report by Paraguayan outlet D10, Omar Alderete is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur. The North London giants are scouring the market for a centre-back ahead of the two transfer windows next year. So, the 27-year-old Getafe defender has emerged as a target for the Premier League club.

Who is Omar Alderete?

Omar Alderete has been one of the most underrated defenders in La Liga since joining Getafe from Hertha BSC. A native of Asuncion, the South American centre-back spent his formative years in Paraguay and graduated from the youth division at Cerro Porteno.

The 27-year-old had to bide his time before landing on his feet. However, the move to Getafe has helped him find a stable footing. The Azulones initially signed Alderete on a season-long loan deal in August 2022 before completing a permanent move in July 2023. The move has been successful, with the player turning out 78 times thus far for Getafe while chipping in with one goal and two assists.

Meanwhile, Alderete’s progress at Getafe has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe. Premier League outfits, in particular, are keen on signing the Paraguayan defender, with recent reports linking him with Everton. However, his next destination might be North London, with Tottenham Hotspur vying for his signature.

London calling?

Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in Omar Alderete is understandable. The North London giants are scouring the market for a centre-back ahead of the two transfer windows next year, with Ange Postecoglou keen on completing his central defensive department.

In addition, Ben Davies is on the wrong side of 30 and will likely leave Tottenham next year. So, several candidates, including Abdukodir Khusanov, have emerged on the North London club’s radar. However, Alderete is also a viable target for Tottenham Hotspur.

The two transfer windows next year will likely see an influx of Paraguayan players. While Diego Gomez has joined Brighton & Hove Albion, Manchester United are vying for Diego Leon’s signature. It will be interesting to see if Alderete joins his compatriot in England by moving to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
