Tottenham ready to ramp up efforts to agree new deal with Cristian Romero, player wants Champions League football

Tottenham are pushing hard to extend Cristian Romero’s contract amidst interest from Real Madrid and Manchester City.

Cristian Romero has established himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League. His consistent performances have attracted attention from some of the biggest teams in the world. With his contract running out in 2027, Tottenham are worried about his long-term future at the club.

The North London club wants to secure his future and according to a report from TBR, Spurs are all set to step up their efforts to extend their defensive mainstays contract. They are all set to hold renewal talks in the near future as they hope to tie Romero down to a new long-term deal.

After making a name for himself at Atalanta, Romero made the move to the Premier League in the summer of 2021. He has had a phenomenal rise over the past few years. While Romero might not have won anything with Tottenham, he has conquered the world with Argentina having won the World Cup and two Copa America titles.

The 26-year-old is considered to be one of the best defenders in the world and he has been Spurs’ one of the most consistent players. The North London club are worried about his long-term future as he will only have two years left on his deal next summer.

Romero’s future is a massive talking point

Real Madrid and Manchester City are two European giants who want to prise him away from Tottenham. Los Blancos lack depth at the back. Injuries to key defenders have troubled them of late and they want to add a world-class defender to ensure they continue their dominance.

Romero is a perfect fit for their system and they are willing to make a move for him next summer. While City have quite a few talented defenders in their squad, Pep Guardiola wants to freshen things up as some of his stars haven’t been consistent enough this term.

Both City and Madrid have the financial strength to get a deal over the line and they will most likely have Champions League football to offer. The Argentine international is keen on playing in the biggest competition in Europe, something that might not happen at Spurs.

An offer from either team could lure him but Tottenham want to ensure they do not lose out on one of their best players. They are ready to offer him a new deal that will make him the highest-paid player in the team and secure his future in the long run.

They are looking to step up their efforts and are hoping to hold renewal talks early in 2025. But, as of now, Romero’s camp are assessing all the options at his disposal.
