Chelsea are eager to sign Joel Ordonez ahead of the January transfer window, as the Club Brugge star fits their project very well.
According to Ecuadorian outlet Expreso, Chelsea are keen to bring Joel Ordonez to Stamford Bridge ahead of the January transfer window. The young Ecuadorian centre-back has been impressing in Belgium, and a move to West London would mean he would join international teammate Moises Caicedo.
Joel Ordonez finally made his competitive international debut for Ecuador, having played in two friendlies before. The defender played 90 minutes against Bolivia in a 4-0 win, and the player could already have a big story ahead in January.
Having impressed with Belgian side Club Brugge, the 20-year-old South American defender could soon see himself wearing a Chelsea shirt. He is reportedly “a step away” from sealing a move to the Blues, which would unite him with international teammate Moises Caicedo.
In fact, if Chelsea are very serious about Ordonez coming to Stamford Bridge, they could potentially use Caicedo to influence a move and probably even convince his newest international teammate to switch. In any case, the lure of joining a club like Chelsea will have a far greater appeal to a player like the 20-year-old Ordonez.
For their part, Club Brugge recently renewed his deal after a year in the team, which ties him down until 2028. Hence, there is a chance the Belgian side will demand a decent enough fee in exchange, as Chelsea are likely to bring the young Ecuadorian defender to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea keen to sign defenders
The idea of signing someone like Joel Ordonez will certainly help Chelsea build towards the idea of fulfilling a part of their project. There will be question marks about the 20-year-old South American defender’s ability to adapt to the Premier League immediately, and Chelsea are also looking at experienced stars like Jonathan Tah.
Similarly, they are also chasing other names like Illia Zabarnyi from Bournemouth, as Enzo Maresca and the owners are likely to make some significant changes to the defence. For now, the signing of Ordonez will be for their long-term project, as there is a likelihood that Chelsea could loan out the defender to another side to gain experience.
