Aston Villa boss Unai Emery could agree to sanction the departure of their Brazilian defender Diego Carlos in January.
Aston Villa will be looking to reinforce their defence when the transfer window reopens in January. But, before they push to bring in a new central defender, they will look to offload players who are not a part of Unai Emery’s long-term plans.
According to a report from Football Insider, Emery is not convinced with Diego the performances of Diego Carlos and has given the green light for his sale in the upcoming transfer window.
Carlos had made quite a name for himself with his impressive performances at Sevilla. However, things have not been that great for him at Aston Villa. The Spaniard has not been able to establish himself as a key figure in their team despite getting plenty of chances since joining them in 2022 for £26 million.
Carlos’s future was a big talking point during the summer, and Aston Villa were reportedly ready to negotiate his departure towards the end of the window. However, things did not go according to plan.
Emery is ready to sell Carlos
Over the past six months, he has featured in 11 matches for Emery’s team but has not been able to convince the Spanish manager that he is the right man for the job. The Aston Villa boss does not want to bank on him going forward, and the West Midlands club could look to cash in on him sooner rather than later.
Aston Villa have struggled defensively as they have only kept four clean sheets so far while conceding in each of their last five outings. While Tyrone Mings’s return from injury is a massive boost for Villa, the recruitment team is already looking at potential options to further bolster their defence.
Having struggled to keep their finances in check during the summer window, the Premier League outfit will be very careful with how they go about with their transfer business in January. They will look to get Diego Carlos off their books which will help raise funds and make room to bring in an upgrade in that position.
Fulham were one of the clubs who had expressed interest in the Brazilian centre-back during the summer transfer window, and it will be interesting to see if they return for his signature during the winter window.
