Tottenham set to trigger Son Heung-min contract option

London giants Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly ready to trigger an option to extend the contract of Son Heung-min by 12 months.

According to a report by the Daily Telegraph, Son Heung-min will soon see his contract running until June 30, 2026. Tottenham Hotspur can extend the nine-season veteran attacker’s deal by 12 months due to an option in the agreement between the two parties. So, the North London outfit will soon inform the South Korean international of the decision to complete the extension.

Son Heung-min and an iconic Tottenham spell

Son Heung-min has gone from strength to strength since joining Tottenham Hotspur from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth £22 million in August 2015. The Asian attacker hit the ground running at the North London club and quickly established himself as a pivotal figure at White Hart Lane.

The 32-year-old has only had a few phases of inconsistent displays while maintaining his high levels in the last nine years. While fitness issues have started piling up in recent months, Son has been solid in the first few weeks of the 2024/25 season, chipping in with three goals and three assists in seven Premier League outings thus far.

However, Son’s long-term future has left Tottenham Hotspur in a spot of bother. The South Korean international has entered the final nine months of his contract with the Premier League outfit, with the two parties yet to seal an agreement over a new deal. In addition, the veteran attacker has been coy while speaking about his future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

What next?

Recent reports have linked Son Heung-min with Saudi Pro League clubs, with the big-spending outfits ready to make him their next high-profile signing. In addition, they have been hoping to land him on a Bosman move to ensure they can hand the Tottenham captain lucrative wages.

However, a Bosman move will not see the light of day, with Tottenham Hotspur ready to trigger an option in his contract, which hands the North London outfit the right to extend his deal by 12 months. The Premier League giants only need to inform Son that they are exercising the clause.

While Son remains committed to ending Tottenham’s trophy drought, Tottenham will hope to open formal talks with him regarding a new long-term contract. Nevertheless, the North London outfit can stop worrying about that for a few months once they extend the 32-year-old South Korean attacker’s deal by 12 months.
