Barcelona in transfer tussle to sign Enzo Fernandez

Barcelona are keeping track of Enzo Fernandez’s situation at Chelsea, with recent suggestions pointing to the midfielder’s unhappiness.

According to The Sun, Barcelona are one of the clubs keeping close tabs on the situation of Enzo Fernandez following reports of his unhappiness at Chelsea. The Argentine midfielder has been relegated to the bench recently and has begged questions about his future at Stamford Bridge.

In the year and a half that Enzo Fernandez has been at Chelsea, the midfielder has barely shown he is worth the £107 million fee the club paid him. The Blues made a big statement in January 2023 when they splashed the cash on the Argentine following his stellar performances at the Qatar World Cup.

The investment has not paid off, and there are suggestions that the midfielder is a flop, given the outlay Chelsea made to bring him from Benfica. The emergence of Romeo Lavia, another expensive Chelsea midfield signing, has paired well with Moises Caicedo in Enzo Maresca’s midfield setup, and this pairing seems like the one the manager might persist with.

Despite starting Fernandez from the start in six of the nine Premier League games the midfielder has played in, his exclusion from the beginning in the last three has caused some concerns. The 23-year-old has had problems with his personal life of late, which might also explain why he has been taken out of the limelight.

However, Chelsea might be open to selling Enzo Fernandez if his performances keep dropping. From the 23-year-old’s perspective, he would be open to fighting for his place to dislodge one of Lavia or Caicedo; the Argentine needs to prepare to sit on the bench for months together and become a third-choice midfielder at Chelsea.

Barcelona interested

Should Chelsea eventually decide to cash in on Enzo Fernandez, a host of clubs, including Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Inter Milan, are already showing interest. The Blaugrana are particularly keen on the 23-year-old for his style and suitability to their squad.

However, when it comes to Barcelona, there is always the question of finances, given how much they struggled to sign Dani Olmo and register him last summer. Those money issues could be a big factor if they are to plan on signing Fernandez.

The Blaugrana will need to sort out the financial aspects to land the Argentine and make arrangements, considering Chelsea will certainly ask for a significant fee, if not the £107 million they paid.
