Barcelona contemplating Lucas Chevalier swoop

La Liga heavyweights Barcelona are reportedly weighing up a move for 22-year-old highly-rated French goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier from Ligue 1 club LOSC Lille.

According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Lucas Chevalier is the subject of interest from FC Barcelona. The Catalan giants are scouring the market for a goalkeeper heading into the 2025 summer transfer window. So, the 22-year-old highly-rated LOSC Lille shot-stopper has emerged as a target for the Blaugrana.

Who is Lucas Chevalier?

Lucas Chevalier has established himself as one of the best young goalkeepers in Ligue 1 since breaking into the first-team squad at LOSC Lille. A native of Calais, the Frenchman spent his formative years in his homeland, passing through the academies at three clubs before graduating from the youth division at LOSC Lille.

The 22-year-old made his first-team bow for Les Dogues at the onset of the 2022/23 season and has been a regular for the Ligue 1 club since then. Chevalier has turned out nearly 100 times thus far for Lille while keeping 38 clean sheets and conceding 89 goals.

While the French goalkeeper has yet to make his international bow for Les Bleus, he should have the opportunity soon. Meanwhile, Chevalier’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. Barcelona will be one of his prospective suitors in the 2025 summer transfer window.

Barcelona move beckons?

Barcelona’s interest in Lucas Chevalier is understandable. The Catalan giants want to plan for life after Marc-Andre ter Stegen, with the German international approaching the twilight of his glittering career. In addition, the experienced goalkeeper has become error-prone, with his howlers making him a liability for Barcelona.

Meanwhile, the Blaugrana will likely part ways with Inaki Pena and Wojciech Szczesny next summer. So, Barcelona should invest in a top-class goalkeeper next year, with several candidates, including Marcin Bulka, emerging on the club’s radar. Chevalier is also a viable target, especially since Diogo Costa is too expensive for them.

The 22-year-old LOSC Lille goalkeeper can be the long-term solution between the sticks for FC Barcelona, considering his age profile and potential. It will be interesting to see if he becomes the top target for the Catalan outfit next year.
