AC Milan ponder re-signing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United

Serie A giants AC Milan are reportedly mulling over re-signing 24-year-old Italian international Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United next year.

According to a report by Italian outlet Milan Live, Sandro Tonali is the subject of interest from AC Milan. The Serie A giants regret parting ways with the Newcastle United midfielder nearly 18 months ago. However, re-signing the Italian international will be complicated, considering the Rossoneri sold him for €64 million in July 2023.

Sandro Tonali and his Newcastle journey so far

Sandro Tonali has endured a topsy-turvy ride since joining Newcastle United from AC Milan in a shock deal worth €64 million in July 2023. The young midfielder was instrumental in the Rossoneri winning the Serie A title a few years ago but was available for sale due to the club’s precarious financial situation.

The 24-year-old has made his mark for his club and country since joining Newcastle United. However, he missed nearly the entire 2023/24 season due to a ban related to breaching betting rules. So, Tonali has managed only 19 appearances thus far for Newcastle United while chipping in with one goal.

However, the Italian international has shown that he has not lost a step since returning to action a few weeks ago. With Tonali making an impression in his outings for his club and country, his stock in the market has risen, with AC Milan mulling over re-signing him next year.

Milan return on the cards?

AC Milan’s interest in re-signing Sandro Tonali is understandable. The Serie A giants are scouring the market for a midfielder heading into the two transfer windows next year. So, several candidates, including Johnny Cardoso, have emerged on AC Milan’s radar over a possible move next year.

However, Tonali is also a viable target for the Rossoneri, considering they are his dream club. In addition, the Newcastle United midfielder has already played for a few years for the Serie A outfit and will not take long to settle down at San Siro again. However, he will not be a cost-effective acquisition for AC Milan.

The Serie A giants sold Tonali to Newcastle United for €64 million in July 2023. So, it is improbable that Newcastle United will accept a lower transfer fee to part ways with the 24-year-old Italian international next year. It will be interesting to see if the two parties reunite at San Siro anytime soon.
