Barcelona in transfer tussle to land Oscar Mingueza

Barcelona will reportedly compete with AS Roma to land 25-year-old Spanish international Oscar Mingueza from Celta Vigo next year.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Oscar Mingueza is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The Catalan giants are scouring the market for a versatile defender ahead of the 2025 summer transfer window. However, the Blaugrana will face stiff competition from AS Roma and Celta Vigo for the Spanish international.

Oscar Mingueza and his career so far

Oscar Mingueza has come leaps and bounds since joining Celta Vigo from Barcelona on a free transfer in July 2022. A native of Santa Perpètua de Mogoda, the Spaniard spent his formative years in his homeland and graduated from the fabled La Masia division, representing Barcelona for a decade and a half.

However, the 25-year-old never went beyond the role of a backup defender for Barcelona and steadily fell in stature in his last couple of seasons with the Blaugrana. However, Mingueza has resurrected his stuttering fortunes since joining Celta Vigo, with his exploits helping him break into his national team.

The Spanish international has turned out 72 times thus far for Celta Vigo while chipping in with four goals and seven assists. Meanwhile, Oscar Mingueza’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe, including Barcelona and AS Roma.

Fairytale homecoming on the cards?

Barcelona’s interest in re-signing Oscar Mingueza is understandable. The Catalan giants are scouring the market for a versatile defender ahead of the 2025 summer transfer window, with Hansi Flick keen on adding another right-back option to his squad. So, several right-backs, including Tiago Santos, have emerged on Barcelona’s radar.

However, Mingueza is also a viable target, considering his experience in La Liga and improving performances. Barcelona will face stiff competition from AS Roma for the Spanish international, whose contract with Celta Vigo has a release clause worth €20 million. In addition, the Galician outfit will look to purchase all his rights.

Barcelona and Celta Vigo equally share Mingueza’s rights, with the deal allowing Barcelona to re-sign him for €10 million instead of €20 million. So, the Blaugrana will face a three-way battle from AS Roma and Celta Vigo to secure the 25-year-old Spaniard’s services next summer.
