Everton’s new owner, Dan Friedkin, is reportedly considering an audacious move for 61-year-old Portuguese tactician Jose Mourinho to replace Sean Dyche.
According to a report by Football Insider, Jose Mourinho is the subject of interest from Everton. Dan Friedkin, the incoming owner of the Merseyside club, wants a new world-class manager to replace the under-fire Sean Dyche. So, the Toffees are considering an ambitious move for the 61-year-old former Chelsea and Manchester United boss to take over from Dyche.
The Jose Mourinho rollercoaster ride
Jose Mourinho has been one of the most polarising managers in the world since rising in prominence with FC Porto. The Portuguese tactician scripted history when he guided the Primeira Liga giants to the UEFA Champions League title in the 2003/04 season before joining Chelsea and making waves in the Premier League.
The 61-year-old has lifted at least one trophy at every club except Tottenham, winning league titles with Chelsea, Inter Milan, and Real Madrid while enjoying mild success at Manchester United. Mourinho is currently in charge of Fenerbahce, taking over as the Turkish club’s new manager before the 2024/25 season.
The former Chelsea and Manchester United manager will likely go the distance with Fenerbahce in the race for the Super Lig title, although his charges are three points behind Galatasaray after the first seven games. However, Everton will look to end Mourinho’s spell in Turkiye after only one season after identifying him as a candidate to replace Sean Dyche.
Premier League return on the horizon?
Sean Dyche is under increasing pressure at Everton after a horrendous start to the 2024/25 season, with the Merseyside club winning only one Premier League game after six outings. So, several candidates, including Maurizio Sarri, have emerged on Everton’s radar, with Jose Mourinho the latest target.
While David Moyes is reportedly open to a fairytale return to Goodison Park, incoming owner Dan Friedkin is plotting an ambitious move for Mourinho. The 59-year-old American businessman has secured an agreement with Farhad Moshiri to purchase his 94.1 per cent stake in the club.
So, Friedkin is already planning vital changes at Everton, with Mourinho emerging as a “strong option” to replace Dyche. It will be interesting to see if the 61-year-old Portuguese tactician is ready to leave Fenerbahce to return to the Premier League for the fifth time after spells with Chelsea (x2), Manchester United, and Tottenham.
