Liverpool plot January move for a defensive midfielder

Liverpool are looking to sign a new defensive midfielder in January as Arne Slot is ready to sanction the departure of Wataru Endo.

Liverpool were keen on signing a new defensive midfielder throughout the summer transfer window. They were in talks to sign Martin Zubimendi but things didn’t go according to plan for them. However, their search continues and according to a report from Football Insider, the Reds are now looking to sign a world-class number six when the window reopens in January.

The Merseyside club have been on the lookout for a new defensive midfielder for some time now. Jordan Henderson and Fabinho’s departure forced them into the market. While they wanted to sign a world-class star, the Reds had to settle for Wataru Endo who was considered a stop-gap signing.

Arne Slot who took charge of the club in the summer has been keen on reinforcing the position. The Reds were looking to sign a younger player who could help them in the long run. They were in talks with Real Sociedad’s Zubimendi and everything was in place for the transfer to go through.

But, the deal collapsed at the player decided against making the move to Anfield late in the window. The Reds failed to address their biggest concern and Slot decided to go ahead with Ryan Gravenberch in the number six role. While the Dutch international has been doing wonders in an unfamiliar role, the new Liverpool still wants to bring in a new defensive midfielder.

Liverpool’s search for a new number six continues

He wants to have someone who can further strengthen his midfield and compete with the former Ajax star for a place in the starting XI. Meanwhile, he is ready to offload Endo who joined the club in the summer of 2023. While he still has close to three years left on his contract, the veteran Japanese midfielder is not an important of his plans.

The 31-year-old has only made cameo appearances in the league and Champions League. The report suggests Slot is ready to sanction his departure and use the raised funds to sign a young player who can help them in the short as well as the long run.
