Manchester City enter Morten Hjulmand chase

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have entered the race for the services of Morten Hjulmand following an injury to Rodri.

According to a report from CaughtOffside, Manchester City are ready to battle it out with Arsenal, Manchester United and Barcelona for the services of Danish midfielder Morten Hjulmand. Pep Guardiola’s team are keen on reinforcing their midfield following an injury to Rodri and the Sporting CP star has emerged as a potential target who can help them out.

Rodri has been an integral part of City’s first team over the years. He picked up a long-term injury against Arsenal that could keep him on the sidelines for the remainder of the season. As a result, Guardiola’s team have started to look for someone who can help them cope with the loss of the Spanish international.

They have already dropped the idea of bringing Kalvin Phillips back to the club and are looking at Sporting’s Morten Hjulmand as a potential target. The 25-year-old defensive midfielder has made quite a name for himself thanks to his consistent performances for the Portuguese outfit since joining them from Lecce in the summer of 2023.

City’s interest in Hjulmand is a massive blow for Arsenal and United

While he prefers playing in a defensive role, the Danish international is capable enough to feature in any role. He is heading into his prime as a football and could be an exceptional signing for Guardiola’s team. City’s interest in his services means a massive blow for the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Barcelona have been monitoring him for a while now.

The Gunners might have signed Mikel Merino in the summer but he is yet to make his debut having picked up an injury following his arrival. With Jorginho and Thomas Partey not getting any younger, the 25-year-old could be another exciting addition to their squad.

Manchester United also seek more depth in the centre of the park and they have been scouting the Danish star for a while now. With Casemiro struggling for form, Christian Eriksen in the final year of his contract and Scott McTominay no longer at the club, the Reds Devils want more quality options in midfield and Hjulmand could be a great addition to their squad.

Hjulmand’s desire and Barcelona’s interest

The Danish international has expressed his desire to play in the Premier League which means all three clubs do stand a chance. While he has a €80 million release clause in his contract, the English clubs value him at around €50 million and could submit an initial offer in that region.

Apart from the English clubs, Barcelona are also keen on his signature. The Catalan giants are yet to sign a new defensive midfielder who can help fill the void left by Sergio Busquets. Hjulmand is someone who is quite highly rated and he could help their cause.
