Alexander Isak not close to new Newcastle United deal yet

Newcastle United are reportedly no closer to securing an agreement over a new contract with 24-year-old Swedish striker Alexander Isak, a target for Arsenal.

According to a report by Give Me Sport, Alexander Isak remains the subject of interest from Arsenal. The Gunners are keen on signing a striker next year after missing out on one in the summer transfer window. Meanwhile, Newcastle United are yet to secure an agreement over a new contract with the Swedish international and are considering offering him an extension first.

Alexander Isak and his Newcastle United journey

Alexander Isak has been one of the best strikers in the Premier League since joining Newcastle United from Real Sociedad in August 2022. The Swede took some time to get going at the club level after initially drawing comparisons to Zlatan Ibrahimovic during his youth career.

However, the 24-year-old has come into his own during his spell with Newcastle United, even though he has struggled with a few fitness issues in the last two years. Isak has turned out 71 times thus far for Newcastle United while chipping in with 36 goals and six assists.

Meanwhile, Alexander Isak’s progress at Newcastle United has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe, including Arsenal. However, the Magpies want to tie the Swedish striker to a new contract, with recent reports claiming they are ready to include a release clause in an agreement while hiking his £120,000-a-week wages.

Arsenal keen on Isak

Arsenal mulled over signing Alexander Isak in the summer transfer window before a move failed to materialise. The Gunners remain keen on landing the Newcastle United attacking mainstay, and the North London club’s interest in him makes sense, considering Gabriel Jesus’s struggles in front of the goal.

With Kai Havertz the only other striker in Mikel Arteta’s squad, Arsenal can do with a prolific striker, with Isak a viable target. The North London outfit should not have any problems improving the Swedish striker’s £120,000-a-week wages.

While Newcastle United want to tie Isak to a new contract, the 24-year-old Swede is taking his time to put pen to paper. So, Arsenal might have a window of opportunity to secure the player’s services if the discussions remain stalled. Meanwhile, the Magpies are considering offering him an extension till they can secure an agreement on a new deal.
