Crystal Palace will soon hold talks with 24-year-old England international Marc Guehi after Liverpool and Newcastle United chased him this past summer.
According to a report by Football Insider, Crystal Palace will aim to get Marc Guehi to commit to the club for his long-term future. The English centre-back has entered the final two years of his contract with the South London outfit. So, they want to tie him to a new contract amid his links with Liverpool and Newcastle United.
Marc Guehi and his career so far
Marc Guehi has established himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League since joining Crystal Palace from Chelsea in July 2021. The Englishman could not establish a foothold in the first-team squad at the West London club and needed to embark on a new adventure, with the Eagles giving him what he needed.
The 24-year-old has turned out 115 times thus far for Crystal Palace while chipping in with five goals and two assists. In addition, Guehi has donned the captain’s armband multiple times for the South London outfit. However, the English centre-back faces an uncertain future at Selhurst Park heading into 2025.
The England international has piqued the attention of the who’s who of Premier League football with his progress at Crystal Palace. Newcastle United pushed hard to secure Marc Guehi’s services in the summer transfer window, while Liverpool also showed interest in him. However, Crystal Palace successfully kept him at Selhurst Park and will look to tie him to a new contract.
A man in demand
Newcastle United’s interest in Marc Guehi is understandable. The Magpies have been keen on bolstering their backline despite signing Lloyd Kelly in a Bosman move, as Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are long-term absentees. Guehi was thus a viable target this summer before a move failed to materialise.
As for Liverpool, the Merseyside outfit should plan for life after Virgil van Dijk, with the veteran Dutch defender on the wrong side of 30. In addition, Joe Gomez has struggled with injuries throughout his spell with Liverpool. Guehi is thus an option worth considering for the Reds.
However, the England international will likely cost more than the £70 million Crystal Palace demanded this past summer. With the Eagles eager to tie him to a new contract, Marc Guehi’s price tag will likely increase from £70 million if he commits his long-term future to the South London outfit.
