David Fofana is expected to part ways with Chelsea in the coming days despite the end of the transfer window.
David Fofana is surplus to requirements at Chelsea and they have been on the lookout for a potential destination for the Ivorian international for some time. The Blues could not find a new club for him on transfer deadline day but according to Fabrizio Romano, Fofana is expected to leave the club in the next days.
The 21-year-old made a name for himself at Molde FK before making the move to the London club in the winter of 2023. He has only made four first-team appearances for the Blues and was out on loan last season. He spent the first half of the season at Union Berlin contributing towards three goals in 17 outings.
During the second half, he made the move to Burnley where he contributed towards five goals in his 15 outings. While Fofana returned to his parent club in the summer and still has five years left on his deal at the club, he has been linked with a move away since the start of the window.
German outfit Hoffenheim and EFL Championship club Sunderland opened talks with the Blues to sign the 21-year-old on transfer deadline day. But, those negotiations didn’t go according to plan and the move collapsed.
Chelsea are seeking a new club for Fofana
While the transfer window in major European countries is now over, there are a few top countries where the window remains open and Chelsea are trying to find him an ideal club.
They are exploring a potential destination in Turkiye, Greece, Portugal, Saudi Arabia and the Netherlands. The Ivorian international is unlikely to get much game time at the London club. As a result, a move away will be the best for Fofana to continue his progress.
Reports earlier this week suggested that the Blues want to sanction another loan departure. They feel the 21-year-old could eventually be an important part of their first team. As a result, they will most likely prefer a simple loan move without a buy option or obligation.
