Crystal Palace in transfer tussle to sign Maxwel Cornet

Crystal Palace will reportedly look to beat Southampton to the signature of 27-year-old West Ham United wide player Maxwel Cornet on the Deadline Day.

According to an update by Dharmesh Sheth, Mark McAdam, and Michael Bridge on Sky Sports, Maxwel Cornet is the subject of interest from Crystal Palace. The 27-year-old wide player does not have a long-term future at West Ham United. However, the Eagles face stiff competition from Southampton, although he prefers to remain in London if he leaves West Ham.

Maxwel Cornet and his story so far

Maxwel Cornet has struggled to make his mark since joining West Ham United from Burnley in August 2022. Born in Bregbo, Cote d’Ivoire, he spent his formative years in France, starting his youth career at JS Ars-Laquenexy before spending the rest of his formative years with FC Metz.

However, the 27-year-old wide player rose in prominence during his spell with Lyon, spending half a dozen years at the Ligue 1 club. A short spell with Burnley followed before West Ham United signed him a year later. However, Cornet’s spell in England has not been successful thus far.

The Ivory Coast international has managed only 961 minutes of game time across 37 outings in all competitions thus far, chipping in with one goal and six assists. However, Maxwel Cornet’s long-term future at West Ham United is uncertain, with Crystal Palace among his prospective suitors in the summer transfer window.

Set for an extended stay in London?

Crystal Palace’s interest in Maxwel Cornet is understandable. The Eagles have tried and failed to sign a left wing-back thus far in the summer transfer window. Several candidates, including Filip Kostic, have featured on Crystal Palace’s radar without talks reaching anywhere.

Cornet has thus emerged as a viable target for Crystal Palace, with the 27-year-old also an option for a more advanced position. The Eagles are pushing to sign the Ivory Coast international on a season-long loan deal. However, Crystal Palace will face stiff competition from Southampton for the West Ham United outcast.

The report has revealed that while the former Lyon wide player is open to joining either club, he prefers to remain in London. So, Crystal Palace might have the upper hand over Southampton to seal a deadline-day move for the Ivorian.
