Martin Zubimendi now a top target for Liverpool

Liverpool have identified Martin Zubimendi as top target and must trigger his £51 million release clause to have a chance of signing him.

According to The Guardian, Martin Zubimendi has emerged as Liverpool’s priority midfield target this summer. The Spaniard’s contract includes a £51 million release clause. Real Sociedad are not looking to sell, but they will do so at the midfielder’s bequest should he want to join the Merseysiders.

Liverpool are keen on Martin Zubimendi

Liverpool fans are a bit baffled at how quiet their club has been in the transfer market, but soon enough, they could spring to life. Arne Slot has taken his time evaluating his squad and may have concluded that strengthening a few key positions, namely bringing in a holding midfielder, is necessary.

Recent reports pointed towards names like Sander Berge, who is essentially a low-cost option in the market, although Liverpool have other plans. Martin Zubimendi is their priority target going forwards, as the club have identified the Euro 2024 winner as the man who will solve their issues in the defensive midfield position.

Zubimendi also interests Manchester United, and the Red Devils are likely to consider signing him. However, Liverpool has made the first concrete move, as talks are underway with Real Sociedad.

The midfielder has a £51 million release clause in his contract, as Real Sociedad are not willing to negotiate new terms with anyone to reduce the asking rate. Liverpool’s big issue is not meeting that asking price but convincing the player to make a move, as he is not leaning towards leaving Sociedad

Real Sociedad will not block the move

Real Sociedad are not overly keen to let Zubimendi leave, as they consider him crucial to their plans ahead of the new season. They have already sold Robin Le Normand, and Mikel Merino is close to joining Arsenal, as losing Zubimendi will be a big blow. The £51 million-rated La Liga star also rebuffed an approach from the Gunners, as he indicated that he does not have too big an interest in leaving the San Sebastian side.

Liverpool is aware of his stance and willing to try their best to convince him. While Sociedad does not want to part ways, they will not stand in ZubiZubimendi’s should he ask for a transfer. Hence, the Merseysiders still have a chance of signing the Spanish international, as they might be open to paying his release clause.
