Chelsea, Aston Villa behind Borussia Dortmund in Maximilian Beier chase

Chelsea and Aston Villa have been linked with Maximilian Beier this summer but they have now fallen behind Borussia Dortmund in the race to sign the German striker.

According to Florian Plettenberg, Chelsea and Aston Villa are behind the Bundesliga giants in the race for the 21-year-old attacker. It will be interesting to see if they can overtake the Champions League runners-ups and sign the player this summer.

Beier is highly talented and he has a big future ahead of himself. He could prove to be a quality addition for the two English clubs. Both Chelsea and Aston Villa need to add more depth and quality in the final third.

Chelsea need an alternative to Nicolas Jackson who has not been able to score goals consistently. Beier has done quite well in the Bundesliga and he scored 16 goals in all competitions last season. He has the quality to succeed in the Premier League and he could be a key player for the Blues. At Aston Villa, he could support Ollie Watkins in the attack. The England international had a phenomenal campaign but he needs more support in the attack especially now that Aston Villa are competing in the UEFA Champions League.

Where will Maximilian Beier end up?

Both clubs need more quality and depth in the attack and the 21-year-old would be the ideal long term acquisition for them. He is likely to improve further with coaching and experience.

Meanwhile, the Bundesliga giants are keen on the striker as well. They are looking for a quality replacement for Niclas Fullkrug and Beier has been identified as a potential target.

The striker is valued at €25-30 million and they certainly have the financial muscle to get the deal done. It will be interesting to see if they can convince the player to join them over the Premier League duo.

The 21-year-old will look to play regularly at a high level and if the likes of Chelsea and Aston Villa can provide him with such assurances, he could be tempted to join them. They will be able to offer him a more lucrative contract compared to Dortmund as well.

With that said, the German club have a proven track record when it comes to nurturing young players and the 21-year-old might feel that joining them would be the right step in is development.
