Aston Villa could ponder a loan move for Manchester City outcast Kalvin Phillips, who does have some interest from elsewhere.
According to Football Insider, Aston Villa could ponder making a loan bid for Kalvin Phillips as the midfielder eyes an exit from his current surroundings. The Manchester City outcast has no future at the Etihad as some other clubs are also angling for a move for the 28-year-old.
Aston Villa are keen on Kalvin Phillips?
Aston Villa have reportedly submitted a proposal to take Kalvin Phillips on loan this summer. The Manchester City outcast wants to quit the Etihad and look for a club where he is a regular, preferably in the Premier League, as there’s some interest brewing in the background.
Fulham had looked at him as a potential replacement for Joao Palhinha, and whether Phillips would entertain a return to London remains to be seen. Everton are also keen, and as things stand, they are Aston Villa’s biggest threat in a bid to sign the midfielder.
Unai Emery’s side are keen to bolster their midfield after the departure of Douglas Luiz and have already brought in Amadou Onana as his replacement. The manager wants another body in that area to take on the challenges in the new season, with Aston Villa set to feature in the Champions League and would need extra depth in all positions, more so in central midfield.
Manchester City would ideally prefer a permanent sale of the midfielder, although the chances of them convincing any club at this stage to spend significantly are slim. Phillips endured a disastrous loan spell at West Ham in the second part of last season, which has diminished his chances of securing a permanent transfer this summer, meaning Aston Villa could have an opportunity here.
Aston Villa mindful of their finances
Emery wants another midfielder, and the loan proposal to Phillips might indicate the direction he wants to take. They are also keen on Sergi Roberto, who is available on a free transfer. Villa are not flush with cash at the moment and is mindful of its spending, which seems to be balanced by high-profile sales.
They retain an interest in Joao Felix, as Emery wants a marquee signing this summer, meaning they might fall short in funding a move for a new midfielder after that. Hence, the idea of signing either Phillips on loan or Roberto on a free transfer might seem appealing.
