West Ham United are interested in bringing Ajax skipper Steven Bergwijn back to the Premier League ahead of next season.
According to a report from De Telegraaf, West Ham United have registered their interest in signing Steven Bergwijn this summer. The Hammers want to reinforce their attack and feel the Ajax star could be an ideal fit in Julen Lopetegui’s system.
Bergwijn came up the ranks at PSV Eindhoven and made a name for himself with their first team before securing a move to Tottenham back in the winter of 2020. While he had shown a lot of promise during his time at PSV, the 35-cap Dutch international never really got going at the North London club.
The Dutchman did have his days but consistency was missing, and he ended up returning to the Eredivisie to join Ajax in the summer of 2022. The 26-year-old winger has been a lot more consistent since joining the Dutch club, and his performances even helped him secure a place in the Netherlands squad for Euro 2024.
With his nation’s run coming to an end in the semi-finals, the player now has to decide his future. He has already talked with manager Francesco Farioli, who is keen on keeping him in his ranks. The manager has big plans for the winger, who had 13 goals and five assists last season. But, he also understands the fact that the player could look for a new challenge, and his departure could also help them reinforce other areas in their squad.
West Ham keen on Bergwijn
Ajax are in desperate need of funds and they seem to be willing to sanction his departure for €25-30 million. While there is interest in his services from Saudi Arabia as well as other parts of Europe, West Ham are pushing hard to bring him back to the Premier League.
The Hammers want to add more quality to their attack and feel the 26-year-old could be a great addition to their ranks. His ability to feature anywhere in attack will give Lopetegui quite a few tactical options and his pace will cause panic in the opposition defence.
The East London club were keen on signing him during the winter, but Financial Fair Play regulations came in their way. They have retained their interest in the former Tottenham star. While West Ham do need to sell before making moves this summer, the Hammers are in a much better position having already registered interest in him.
