Manchester City are reportedly keen on joining Liverpool in the race for Anthony Gordon as speculation surrounding the Newcastle United star increases.
According to Football Insider, Manchester City is ready to challenge Liverpool in the race for Anthony Gordon. The Merseysiders will see this news as a bitter blow in their pursuit of the Newcastle United star, especially as the Magpies are demanding close to 100 million for the England international.
Manchester City join Anthony Gordon’s race
It’s quite bewildering that Anthony Gordon only signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with Newcastle United in a £45 million move from Everton in January 2023. A player of quality, and given the price the magpies paid, one would have expected at least another year to that contract.
That deal may disadvantage Newcastle United, as they are about to spend the summer fending off interest from top Premier League sides. Liverpool have shown massive interest in recruiting their former player, whom they let go at the age of 11, only for Everton to take him on and develop him into a top player.
Liverpool were told to pay at least £100 million, of which Newcastle United wants £75-80 million in fixed fees and the rest in performance-related add-ons. That might be seen as too expensive by Merseyside chiefs, and adding to their woes, Manchester City have joined the race for the winger who scored 23 goals and assists in all competitions for the Magpies last season.
He could be seen as a replacement for Jack Grealish, who might leave Manchester City. The club are willing to consider offers for the former Aston Villa star. Should they succeed in bringing Gordon, that could also prove problematic for Belgian livewire Jeremy Doku. Pep Guardiola wants another attacker to bring more potency in the final third, and the club is very much in a good position to pay his asking price.
Newcastle United want to keep Gordon
Liverpool’s interest might have turned Gordon’s head, although Newcastle United has no urgent need to sell its best stars in this window. Hence, it would take an exceptional offer and the player’s consent to leave the club.
The Magpies are also keen on a new contract for Gordon, much like some of their other stars, such as Alexander Isak. Hence, the Magpies might have to manoeuvre through a tricky summer period in a bid to keep hold of their best stars, something they want as Eddie Howe continues to build a strong core at St James Park. Meanwhile, the interest in Gordon from Liverpool and now Man City isn’t helping his cause.
