Djed Spence closing in on joining Genoa in loan-to-buy deal

Djed Spence is reportedly inching closer to joining Serie A club Genoa from Tottenham in a loan-to-buy deal in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Football Insider, Djed Spence is on the verge of ending his nightmarish spell at Tottenham Hotspur. The 23-year-old will return to Serie A club Genoa in the summer transfer window, with talks advancing over a loan-to-buy deal worth £7 million. The arrangement will become a permanent move under certain conditions.

Djed Spence and his Tottenham travails

Djed Spence has endured a forgettable stint since joining Tottenham Hotspur from Middlesbrough in July 2022. The North London club signed him after an impressive campaign on loan at Nottingham Forest. However, it later emerged that Antonio Conte had not given his approval to the move.

So, it was hardly surprising that he barely featured for Tottenham in his debut season before they loaned him out to Stade Rennais in January 2023. The ordeal continued last summer as the 23-year-old moved to Leeds United before joining Serie A club Genoa in the winter transfer window this year.

Spence’s fortunes finally improved at Genoa CFC as he turned out 16 times for the Serie A club, racking up nearly as many appearances for them as he did for Stade Rennais and Leeds United. However, that was not enough to convince Ange Postecoglou, with Tottenham ready to cash in on him in the summer transfer window.

Serie A return on the cards?

What Djed Spence did was convince Genoa to complete a permanent move in the summer transfer window. The Red and Blues have been in talks with Tottenham Hotspur to seal the deal in the last few weeks. And a resolution is nearing, according to the latest report.

While Genoa will not complete a permanent move, they will sign Spence on a loan-to-buy deal worth £7 million, with talks advancing. The Serie A club will trigger the purchase clause under certain conditions, which centre around the number of appearances and starts.

With Spence impressing the decision-makers at the Serie A club, he should be confident of sealing a permanent move over the course of the 2024/25 season. For now, talks between all parties are advancing to seal a loan-to-buy deal worth £7 million.
