Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in acquiring the services of Stoke City defensive midfielder Wouter Burger.
According to a report from TEAMtalk, Wouter Burger has put himself on the radar of Tottenham Hotspur on the back of his impressive performances in the Championship. The North London club are gearing up for an important transfer window that could result in some major changes in their squad, and the Stoke City midfielder could be one of their signings.
Burger’s move to Stoke City
On the back of two impressive seasons at FC Basel, Wouter Burger moved to Stoke City last summer. There was no shortage of interest in him. But the Championship outfit won the race and signed him from the Swiss club for around £4.3 million.
Stoke City made significant investments last summer to bolster their squad, and they had lofty expectations for the 2023/24 season. Unfortunately, it has been a campaign to forget for them as they have narrowly escaped relegation from the English second division.
But, Burger’s performances have been a major positive for the club and the fans. He has featured in 41 matches and has even contributed towards 8 goals (4 goals, 4 assists) for the English outfit. The player also contributed to two other goals at FC Basel. He has been a shield in front of the backline, and his consistent performances have resulted in interest from Premier League clubs.
While the 23-year-old defensive midfielder still has over three years left on his deal, Stoke City might not be able to hold onto him given the amount of interest in his services. According to the report, a fee of around £12 million could be enough to secure his services.
Tottenham keen on Burger
Tottenham are one of the clubs keen on adding him to their ranks. The North London club have some big plans to reinforce their squad ahead of next season. They plan to sign a world-class striker, a midfielder and a centre-back.
While they have been working on potential signings to strengthen these areas, Spurs are also looking at Burger in order to give them more depth in midfield. His arrival will bolster the defensive side of things, and his low asking price will allow Postecoglou to add another player to his squad without affecting their budget and summer transfer plans.
The player could be a cost-effective signing that does wonders for them in the long run. While the asking price is quite low, it still won’t be easy for Tottenham to sign him as other Premier League clubs are interested in his signature.
