Newcastle United are reportedly eyeing a summer move for 21-year-old Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford.
As revealed on Alan Nixon on his Patreon channel, Premier League club Newcastle United are keeping tabs on Burnley star James Trafford. The young shot-stopper has been one of the few shining lights in what was a poor campaign for the Clarets.
The 21-year-old made 28 appearances in the Premier League this season, shipping in 62 goals. While the numbers might not appear too flattering, one must remember that Vincent Kompany’s side was one of the worst in the English top flight this season.
With Burnley relegated, the onus will now shift to perhaps retaining their top players. Trafford is one of them and with Newcastle sniffing, a deal could be on the cards. Eddie Howe’s men struggled to replicate their form from 2022/23. But a strong end to the current campaign saw them finish seventh. A major issue the Magpies faced was their inability to keep clean sheets, something that needs to be rectified in the upcoming season.
A major reason for their struggles this season is the absence of first-choice goalkeeper, Nick Pope. Loris Karius and Martin Dubravka have since stepped up but have failed to impress consistently. At 32, Pope is not a long term solution either and bringing in his successor should be a priority.
Trafford fits the bill and will certainly be one for the future in the goalkeeping position for Newcastle United for years to come. The youngster has made 28 appearances, conceding 62 goals while keeping two clean sheets. A promising keeper who excels in one on ones and has quick reflexes, the 21-year-old has the assets for a bright future in the game.
However, he is far from the finished product. In fact, aspects such as claiming the ball from crosses and his distribution both need refining. But the talent is there and for the right price, Newcastle could land themselves their future umber one. However, others, like Aaron Ramsdale, are also in contention.
The opportunity to stay put in the Premier League will also help Trafford’s progress. The chance to secure first-team football from the get-go should also work in his favour if the clubs can reach an agreement. The Englishman could prove to be yet another smart addition to an evolving yet ambitious Newcastle roster.
