Paris Saint-Germain will not launch the offensive to sign 26-year-old Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Frenkie de Jong is no longer the subject of interest from Paris Saint-Germain. The Ligue 1 champions were keen on signing the Barcelona midfielder in the summer transfer window. However, Financial Fair Play concerns have played spoilsport for PSG, with the 26-year-old set to remain at the Catalan club.
The intriguing Frenkie de Jong career
Frenkie de Jong has been one of the best midfielders in the world since before joining Barcelona from Ajax in July 2019. However, he has come leaps and bounds in the last half a decade, having been a pivotal figure in the middle of the park for the Blaugrana. While there have been phases when his future has been uncertain, he has fought back to become a regular.
The 26-year-old has turned out over 200 times thus far for Barcelona, chipping in with 17 goals and 21 assists. However, the Dutch midfielder, who has turned out 54 times for the Netherlands, continues to face an uncertain future due to his high market value. And de Jong has emerged as a target for Paris Saint-Germain.
Other high-profile clubs, particularly from the Premier League, are also interested in securing de Jong’s services in the summer transfer window. However, recent reports have heavily linked the Barcelona midfielder with Paris Saint-Germain.
PSG interested in de Jong
PSG’s interest in Frenkie de Jong is understandable. While the reigning Ligue 1 champions have heavily invested in the midfield unit in the last few years, Fabian Ruiz and Carlos Soler face an uncertain future at Parc des Princes. So, it behoves PSG to invest in a midfielder heading into the summer transfer window.
The Barcelona midfielder has thus emerged as a viable target for Les Parisiens. However, PSG will not launch the offensive for de Jong, with the report claiming they are cooling their interest in him. Financial Fair Play concerns are forcing the Ligue 1 club’s hand heading into the summer transfer window.
So, PSG cannot afford to sign an expensive midfielder like the 54-cap Netherlands international. It will be interesting to see which midfielder becomes the top target for Les Parisiens. Meanwhile, de Jong should remain at FC Barcelona beyond the summer transfer window.
