Chelsea have been handed a blow in their pursuit of the Lautaro Martinez, who will soon sign a new contract with Inter Milan.
A report from TEAMtalk has claimed that Lautaro Martinez is close to signing a new deal with Inter Milan and he is unlikely to move in the summer. The development has come as a blow for Chelsea.
Chelsea were hoping to sign a striker in the summer transfer window, and it remains to be seen who they move for, after the failed pursuit of Martinez. The Blues have struggled to score goals consistently, and they need to bring in an upgrade on Nicolas Jackson.
The former Villarreal attacker has not been able to live up to the expectations since the move to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea will need to improve in that department to get back into the top four and compete for major trophies in the coming seasons.
Meanwhile, Martinez signing a new deal will be a major boost for Inter Milan, who were hoping to hold onto him for the long term. The 26-year-old is undoubtedly one of the best strikers in European football right now, and he has been in outstanding form this season.
Lautaro Martinez would have transformed Chelsea
The Argentine international won the FIFA World Cup in 2022, and he has 31 goal contributions in all competitions this season. He could have transformed Chelsea in the final third. Apart from being a reliable goalscorer, Martinez would have helped out creatively as well.
Initially, it was expected that the player could be open to a new challenge at this stage of his career after proving himself in Italy over the last few seasons. It seems that he is content at Inter and will be looking to guide them to a title now. Inter Milan are firm favourites to win the league title this season, and they will be looking to make their mark in European football next season.
So, holding on to their best players will certainly help them do well. As for Chelsea, they have had a disappointing season thus far, and they could finish in the mid-table positions again. It remains to be seen whether they can bring in the necessary reinforcements at the end of the season and bounce back strongly next year.
