Newcastle United are interested in appointing 48-year-old Brentford director of sport Phil Giles as their new sporting director.
According to Ben Jacobs via GiveMeSport, Newcastle United are looking for Dan Ashworth’s replacement and they could appoint boyhood Magpies fan Phil Giles to take Ashworth’s place as their new sporting director. Giles has done a great job at Brentford and his work has put him on the radar of the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund.
Dan Ashworth’s departure
Manchester United were keen on having a new sporting director to lead their project under the leadership of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS. They managed to convince Dan Ashworth to take charge and he has since been placed on gardening leave by Newcastle.
While the two clubs are busy negotiating compensation for the move, the Magpies have also started the search for a new sporting director. They had an exceptional season last time out as Eddie Howe helped them finish inside the top four and secure Champions League football.
But, unfortunately, they haven’t been able to reach similar heights this season and have received a further blow with Ashworth leaving. While there are numerous candidates on the radar of the Magpies, Phil Giles could be their next sporting director according to Jacobs.
Phil Giles to Newcastle United?
Giles joined Brentford back in 2015 as their sporting director. He has done a great job for the Bees over the years. The 48-year-old has helped them build a sustainable system which has helped them sign great players and nurture them.
He is currently Brentford’s director of sport and his work at the club has put him on the radar of the Public Investment Fund. While Giles is enjoying life at Brentford, he and his family are Newcastle fans and there is a possibility of him making a move to the Magpies before the start of next season.
PIF wants to fill the vacant sporting director position as soon as possible as they look to revive themselves next season. While their ambitions are to compete with the biggest clubs in world football, they initially want to build a sustainable system and that is why they could prefer having Giles in their ranks.
