Manchester City set to initiate contract renewal discussions with John Stones

Manchester City are ready to open contract renewal talks with their 29-year-old defensive mainstay John Stones.

According to a report by HITC, Manchester City want to tie down John Stones to a new contract. Pep Guardiola’s team are all set to hold talks with his representatives regarding a new deal. The 29-year-old has been integral to their success in the recent past. As a result, they are keen on extending his stay.

John Stones and his time at Manchester City

Stones joined Manchester City in the summer of 2016 for a fee of £47.5 million after coming into the limelight while playing for Everton. The England international has gone from strength to strength over the years. Of late, he has been one of the most important players for Guardiola.

In their treble-winning season, last time out, Stones played a key role not just in the heart of the defence but even put in impressive shifts in the midfield. He has struggled with a hip injury in the ongoing season and has featured in only half of their league games. But, Stones is now back fit and has played 90 minutes in each of his last three games.

Manchester City keen on extending Stones’ stay

The England international will be very important to them heading into the final phase of the season as they look to win both major titles once again. His current contract with Manchester City runs until the summer of 2026. While he does have over two years left on his deal, he is keen on extending his stay in the Manchester-based club.

Meanwhile, the 29-year-old utility man remains important to Pep Guardiola’s plans moving ahead, and the Spanish manager has asked the Manchester City hierarchy that his contract should be extended. So, they are all set to initiate discussions with Stones over a new deal, first reported last year.

With the player and the club both keen on extending the deal, it should not be a problem for either party. While no details have been mentioned in the report, it does make it clear that Guardiola is pushing hard for the renewal, and that is because he is a vital player because of his abilities as well as versatility.
