Barcelona will reportedly look to sign 25-year-old Spanish international Dani Olmo from Bundesliga club RB Leipzig this summer.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Dani Olmo is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The reigning La Liga champions want to sign a versatile midfielder in the summer transfer window. Meanwhile, RB Leipzig will demand around €50 million to part ways with the 25-year-old.
Dani Olmo and his Journey After Leaving Barcelona
Dani Olmo has established himself as one of the best playmakers in La Liga since joining RB Leipzig from Dinamo Zagreb in January 2020. A former trainee in Barcelona’s fabled La Masia division, the Spaniard ended his youth career in Croatia after joining Dinamo Zagreb in July 2014.
He rapidly rose through the ranks and spent nearly half a dozen years at Dinamo Zagreb. But his stock has soared during his ongoing four-year stint with RB Leipzig. Meanwhile, the 25-year-old is enjoying an excellent 2023/24 campaign with the Bundesliga club, overcoming injuries to amass seven goals and four assists in 16 appearances thus far.
Olmo’s progress at RB Leipzig has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs. Widespread reports have heavily linked him with many European bigwigs, particularly from the Premier League. But a summer return to Barcelona might be on the cards, with the Blaugrana keen on re-signing him. Meanwhile, RB Leipzig will demand €50 million to sell him.
Return to Catalonia on the Cards?
The reigning La Liga champions hold a long-standing interest in Dani Olmo. They have been keen on bringing him back to Catalonia for a few years and have unsuccessfully pursued his signature in the summer transfer windows in 2022 and 2023. But the continued eagerness to land him is understandable.
While Ilkay Gundogan has been a top-class performer for Barcelona, he is on the wrong side of 30. In addition, Raphinha faces an uncertain future at the Catalan club, meaning Barcelona can do with a versatile midfielder. Olmo has thus emerged as a viable target heading into the summer transfer window.
But paying €50 million to secure Olmo’s services might be beyond Barcelona’s means. The Catalan giants are not financially adept enough to afford a transfer fee of €50 million. So, it will be interesting to see if the Blaugrana can negotiate an acceptable price to re-sign the Spanish international.
