Todd Boehly gives green light to Chelsea move for Matheus Goncalves

Todd Boehly has reportedly approved the pursuit of Brazilian attacker Matheus Goncalves, who has a €100 million release clause.

According to A Bola, Chelsea might pursue Matheus Goncalves after receiving the green light from owner Todd Boehly. The Flamengo teenager carries a €100 million release clause in his contract, something the Blues are unlikely to pay and could negotiate their way to an agreement, as Barcelona are also keen.

Todd Boehly’s green light for Matheus Goncalves

Chelsea have been a different club under their new ownership, spearheaded by Todd Boehly. The American billionaire has sanctioned deals worth over a billion pounds in the last three windows, including €100 million-plus deals for Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo.

Chelsea are no longer looking for established players in the market and are instead pursuing young talents with a big upside in the future. They have scoured the South American markets well, and during Boehly’s time, at least three different agreements have been reached. Those include deals for Ecuadorian starlet Kendry Paez, Brazilian duo Andrey Santos and Angelo Gabriel.

Now they are targeting a third Brazilian in the form of Matheus Goncalves, with Boehly reportedly giving his green light for Chelsea to pursue the 18-year-old Barcelona-linked Brazilian winger. The Catalans are also in the chase, as they are eager to bring more South American talent following the recent arrival of Vitor Roque.

In any case, Chelsea will look to beat the competition for the 18-year-old Flamengo star, who has yet to cement a place under Tite at the Brazilian club. Chelsea are keen on such talent, although they have a big problem to solve as Goncalves has a mammoth €100 million release clause in his contract.

Chelsea to negotiate with Flamengo?

Chelsea are not about to drop €100 million on Goncalves despite his release clause of that price. Flamengo are not expected to demand that much for the player who has not yet had his first-team breakthrough. He has performed well when called upon and has steadily become a fan favourite.

Flamengo are relaxed as they might envisage some seasons for the teenager to spend here. However, growing interest from Europe in the form of Barcelona, and Chelsea may turn Goncalves’s head, leading teams like Chelsea to negotiate and find a way with the Brazilian side over the final fee.
