Manchester United are reportedly contemplating a January move for Sporting CP attacker Marcus Edwards, whose exit clause is worth €60 million.
According to a report by Football Transfers, Marcus Edwards is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils want to bring the English attacker back to the Premier League. The Sporting CP forward has a release clause worth €60 million in his contract. But the Premier League heavyweights hope to seal the deal for a lower sum.
Who is Marcus Edwards?
Marcus Edwards has found a stable foothold since arriving in Portugal from his homeland. A native of London, the 25-year-old spent his formative years with Tottenham Hotspur before graduating from the North London club’s youth division. But he could not establish himself as a first-team player for Tottenham.
Vitoria Guimaraes signed Edwards from Tottenham for free in September 2019. But the move to Sporting CP has brought him prominence, as he has been a solid performer for the Portuguese club. The English attacker has enjoyed a solid 2023/24 season thus far, chipping in with six goals and five assists in 26 appearances.
The player’s progress at Sporting CP has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several Premier League bigwigs. Recent reports have linked Marcus Edwards with many London outfits, including Tottenham. The Englishman has now emerged as a target for Manchester United.
Premier League Return on the Cards?
Manchester United’s interest in Edwards is understandable, considering the struggles of Antony and Jadon Sancho. While Sancho has rejoined Borussia Dortmund on loan until the end of the 2023/24 season, he does not have a future at Old Trafford. In addition, Antony’s struggles might spell doom for him, especially in the Sir Jim Ratcliffe era. The duo might thus depart from Old Trafford soon.
So, Marcus Edwards has emerged as a viable target for Manchester United. But the Red Devils do not have the funds to pay €60 million and prise him away from Sporting CP. Instead, the report suggests Manchester United will look to wrap up the deal for much less, closer to €35 million.
It is unclear if Sporting CP will entertain offers of less than €60 million to sell Edwards. The 25-year-old English attacker is a regular for the Portuguese outfit. So, it is unlikely that Manchester United will seal a move for around €35 million.
