Tottenham formulating bid to sign Joao Gomes

Tottenham Hotspur will soon present a bid to sign 22-year-old Brazilian midfielder Joao Gomes from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

According to a report by Brazilian outlet Gavea News, Joao Gomes is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur. The North London giants are keen on signing a holding midfielder in the January transfer window. And they have readied an offer worth £30 million to sign the 22-year-old Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder.

Who is Joao Gomes?

Joao Gomes has established himself as one of the best young midfielders in the Premier League since joining Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Brazilian midfielder spent his formative years in his homeland and graduated from the Flamengo youth division before arriving in England in January 2023.

The 22-year-old took some time to get going at the Molineux, taking the second half of the 2022/23 season as his bedding-in period. But Gomes has not looked back since establishing a foothold in the first-team squad at the Black Country outfit, becoming a mainstay in the middle of the park for them.

Joao Gomes has amassed nearly 1,500 minutes of game time across 20 appearances in all competitions thus far this season. The youngster’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of many well-known clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham Want Joao Gomes

Tottenham’s interest in Gomes stems from the uncertainties surrounding the long-term future of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. The Danish international will unlikely remain at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium beyond the 2023/24 season, although a winter departure is also possible. Meanwhile, Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr have travelled to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Several midfielders, including Kalvin Phillips, have thus emerged on Tottenham Hotspur’s radar. But Joao Gomes is also a viable target for the North London club. And the Premier League giants are preparing a bid worth £30 million to prise the 22-year-old Brazilian midfielder away from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

It is unclear if Wolverhampton Wanderers will entertain a bid in the January transfer window. But recouping £30 million from Joao Gomes’s sale might be an attractive proposition for the Black Country outfit. Meanwhile, Flamengo can also recoup some money when the 22-year-old leaves Wolverhampton Wanderers. It will be interesting to see if Tottenham can land him.
