Chelsea keen on Sergio Gomez

Chelsea are keen on signing the Manchester City defender Sergio Gomez according to latest reports.

A report from Fichajes claims that Chelsea are keeping tabs on the 23-year-old Spanish defender as they look to improve their full-back positions at the end of the season.

Gomez has done reasonably well with Manchester City and he could prove to be a useful acquisition for Chelsea. However, the Blues already have two left-backs at their disposal and they would have to cash in on either Ben Chilwell or Marc Cucurella before signing the Manchester City defender.

In addition to that, it remains to be seen whether the defending Premier League champions are prepared to sell the Spaniard in the coming months.

Manchester City are already lacking in depth when it comes to the left-back department and they have had to field makeshift full-backs this season. They will not want to weaken the squad any further and they will probably look to sign a quality left-back before letting Gomez leave the club.

Although Chelsea have two left-backs at their disposal, Cucurella has not been able to live up to the expectations since his big money moved to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea should look to cash in on him and invest the proceeds on a player capable of improving them.

Chelsea have looked quite vulnerable defensively and they will have to improve in that department if they want to compete for major trophies in the coming seasons. The Blues finished in the midtable positions last year and it remains to be seen whether they can secure European qualification this season.

There is no doubt that they have a quality squad at the disposal and a top class manager in charge. They have shown an improvement in recent weeks and it remains to be seen whether they can sustain that run of form and climb further up the table.

Meanwhile, Gomez wants to play regularly in the Premier League and if Manchester City cannot provide him with that platform, he could be tempted to move to Chelsea if there is an opportunity ahead of him. It will be interesting to see how the situation develops over the next few months.
