Chelsea youth product Ian Maatsen is closing in on a loan move to Borussia Dortmund as both parties have a verbal agreement in place.
According to Florian Plettenberg, Borussia Dortmund are looking to add more depth to their backline in the ongoing transfer window. The Bundesliga giants have their eyes set on the 21-year-old Chelsea full-back Ian Maatsen.
Ian Maatsen: The Story This Season
The Dutch youth international has not had much game time in the ongoing season, and a move elsewhere could help his cause. Maatsen joined the Chelsea youth division back in the summer of 2018. He has come up the ranks over the years and was out on loan at Burnley last season.
His impressive performances in the 2022/23 season while out on loan have resulted in him getting promoted to the Blues’ first team ahead of the ongoing season. He might have made it to their first team but is still down the pecking order and has only had limited game time so far this season.
In his 15 outings, he has only racked up 378 minutes. As a result, Chelsea are ready to let Maatsen leave the club in the ongoing transfer window as the player seeks regular first-team football.
While initial reports suggested that Chelsea were ready to part ways with him permanently for £31.5 million, they have reached an agreement with Borussia Dortmund on a straightforward short loan deal.
Bundesliga Calling
The Bundesliga club do not have much depth in the left-back slot, Ramy Bensebaini is their only out-and-out left-side full-back. As a result, they are keen on having Maatsen. The 21-year-old will not only add depth but will also add a lot of quality to the mix which could help the German club.
They wanted to sign him on a short six-month loan deal and have managed to reach a verbal agreement with the Blues. Even the player is quite keen on making the move to the Bundesliga club. With the clubs now in agreement, we are in the final stage of the transfer. If everything goes to plan, the 21-year-old will soon make a move to Germany to start his loan spell with Dortmund.
