Real Madrid considering Robert Renan swoop

La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid are reportedly keeping tabs on 20-year-old Brazilian prospect Robert Renan over a possible January move.

According to a report by Spanish outlet AS, Robert Renan is the subject of interest from Real Madrid. The Merengues are scouring the market for centre-backs heading into the January transfer window. The 20-year-old Zenit St. Petersburg defender has thus emerged as a viable target for them.

Who is Robert Renan?

Robert Renan is one of the best young defensive prospects in the world. The Brazilian whizkid passed through the academies at Gremio and Corinthians before graduating from the latter club’s youth division. But his stint with Corinthians did not last long, with Zenit St. Petersburg signing him in January 2023.

The 20-year-old prospect has yet to become a regular for Zenit, managing only 18 appearances thus far for the Russian club. But Renan’s stock remains high, as he has emerged on the radar of several high-profile clubs. And the youngster’s next destination might be Real Madrid.

Reports in the last 18 months have linked the former Corinthians prospect with many Premier League bigwigs. But with Real Madrid interested in Robert Renan, the equation changes considerably. However, Los Blancos might prefer a short-term loan move for the player, which might not be ideal for him.

Real Madrid Calling?

Real Madrid will delve into the market for a centre-back heading into the January transfer window. The Spanish giants have lost two first-choice central defenders to long-term knee injuries, with David Alaba being the latest in the treatment room. That has left Carlo Ancelotti with only two players in his squad for the central defensive berths.

With Real Madrid not in an ideal situation in the centre-back department, a rare January move might be on the cards. Several central defenders, including Raphael Varane, have thus emerged on Real Madrid’s radar. But the Merengues are also keeping tabs on Robert Renan over a possible move.

Los Blancos will prefer a loan move for the 20-year-old Brazilian defensive prospect. But it is unclear if Zenit St. Petersburg will give the green light to such an arrangement. So, it will be interesting to see if Renan joins Real Madrid on loan next month.
