Manchester United are reportedly keen on signing the Athletic Club Bilbao goalkeeper Unai Simon.
A report from Fichajes claims that Manchester United have already made their move to sign the 26-year-old goalkeeper, but the player has turned down proposals from several clubs and he wishes to continue at the Spanish club.
Bayern Munich were keen on signing the goalkeeper and he had proposals from Saudi Arabia as well. The 26-year-old has a contract with Bilbao until the summer of 2025 and it remains to be seen whether he can secure a contract extension with them soon.
Simon has established himself as a key player for Bilbao and he could’ve been a quality acquisition for Manchester United. It is no surprise that the Red Devils are looking to bring in goalkeeping reinforcements despite signing Andre Onana at the start of the season.
The former Inter Milan goalkeeper has been abysmal for his new club so far and his errors have cost them valuable points. Manchester United need to bring in a reliable goalkeeper soon and signing Simon in January would have been a quality addition. It will be interesting to see if Manchester United decide to come forward with an improved offer for the player in the coming weeks. Alternatively, they could move on to other targets.
The Red Devils have had a mediocre season so far and they will need to bring in the right players to finish the season strongly. Signing a reliable goalkeeper should be a top priority for them. They cannot afford to keep dropping points because of goalkeeping mistakes.
There is no doubt that Onana is a quality goalkeeper and he has proven himself at the highest level over the years. However, he is lacking in confidence and form right now. Taking him out of the firing line and letting him regain his confidence and shortness away from the limelight would be the correct decision for the Premier League club now.
The Red Devils have been linked with other goalkeepers in recent weeks as well and it remains to be seen who they end up signing eventually.
