Atletico Madrid will reportedly look to steal a march on Real Madrid in the race to sign 20-year-old Argentine prospect Federico Redondo.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Federico Redondo is the subject of interest from Atletico Madrid. The 20-year-old Argentinos Juniors prospect is also a target for Real Madrid. But the Merengues face a hijack from their local rivals for the young midfielder.
Federico Redondo has established himself as one of the best young prospects in the world in the last few years. The son of the legendary Fernando Redondo, the Argentine whizkid has been with Argentinos Juniors for a decade. He made his first-team debut for the club his father represented last year.
Since then, the 20-year-old has come leaps and bounds, becoming a pivotal figure for his club. The youngster enjoyed a solid 2023 season, turning out 44 times while chipping in with two goals and two assists. Redondo’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of many high-profile clubs.
Recent reports suggested that Barcelona submitted an enquiry for the promising young midfield prospect. But the Blaugrana might no longer be in the picture to secure Redondo’s services. Instead, La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid are keen on signing him from Argentinos Juniors.
Real Madrid’s interest in Redondo is hardly surprising, considering Luka Modric and Toni Kroos are on approaching the end of their glittering careers. So, signing the 20-year-old Argentine prospect makes sense, considering his potential and ability to reprise different roles in the middle of the park. But Real Madrid will now face stiff competition from Atletico Madrid for the youngster.
Atletico Madrid might delve into the market for midfield reinforcements in the summer transfer window. Recent reports have pointed to Koke, Saul Niguez, and Thomas Lemar facing an uncertain future at Civitas Metropolitano. So, Redondo has emerged as a viable target for Atletico Madrid.
But Real Madrid’s relations with the youngster’s father could help them beat Atletico Madrid to his signature. For now, the Colchoneros have emerged as a suitor in the race to sign the 20-year-old Argentine prospect.
