Real Madrid might soon present a new contract to 24-year-old Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Lunin after his recent impressive performances.
According to a report by El Debate, Andriy Lunin might soon receive a new contract from Real Madrid. The 24-year-old goalkeeper has entered the final months of his current deal with the Spanish giants. But his recent impressive performances have impressed the decision-makers at the club.
Andriy Lunin has endured a frustrating spell since joining Real Madrid from Zorya Luhansk in July 2018. The Ukrainian international was one of the most promising young goalkeepers in the world when he arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu. But Thibaut Courtois’s presence has been detrimental to his progress.
The 24-year-old was never going to usurp Courtois unless the Belgian international suffered a monumental drop in form. So, Real Madrid loaned the player out to fellow Spanish clubs, hoping he would continue his progress. But those temporary stints away from Real Madrid produced mixed results.
Lunin has not embarked on another loan spell since returning from his stint with Real Oviedo at the end of the 2019/20 season. Since then, he has played second-fiddle to Courtois, with game time coming at a premium. But the frustrated shot-stopper would have hoped for a change in his fortunes when Courtois picked up a long-term knee injury ahead of the 2023/24 season.
The 24-year-old started the season between the sticks before Real Madrid signed Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea. Since then, Lunin has fallen behind Kepa in the pecking order, thus adding to his frustrations. Recent reports even claimed he would seek a January exit from Real Madrid to resurrect his stuttering career.
But fortune has finally favoured the Ukrainian international, who has played the last two games after Kepa picked up an injury. And Lunin’s performances in those matches have impressed the decision-makers at Real Madrid. The Merengues are now considering offering him a new contract in the coming weeks.

The 24-year-old is in the final year of his current contract with Real Madrid. And with Los Blancos looking to complete a permanent move for Kepa, he should ideally leave. But it will be interesting to see if Real Madrid can compel Lunin to sign a new deal instead of departing from the Santiago Bernabeu next year.
