The cathedral of football, San Siro was the host to the UEFA Champions League pre-quarters, a match featuring Arsenal and AC Milan. The European Giants were the favorites to win the game at home as an out-of-form Gunners outfit traveled to the Mecca of Italian Football hoping for a miracle. With Cesc Fabregas and Mathieu Flamini in the midfield, Arsenal boasted of talented youth capable of match-changing moments on certain days. The heavily experienced Milan midfield failed to mark the Arsenal talisman as he dug the first nail into Milan’s coffin.
The match was already in the dying minutes when Cesc Fabregas collected a pass in the middle of the park, surged forward, without much resistance from the tired Milan midfield, and smashed home from 30 yards. It wasn’t probably the sweetest strike ever, but the moment was massive, as the Arsenal star ran across the pitch, thumping his chest, kissing his badge and celebrating with his team-mates. Soon after, Adebayor provided the finishing touch to embarrass the Italian giants at home – first-time an English team beating Milan at the Siro!
It was easily one of the greatest game for Arsenal in an European tie, almost as sweet as the 5-1 win over Inter at the same ground a few years before. Cesc Fabregas grabbed the headlines in every newspaper the next day, and it remains one of the most memorable European game for a Gooner, in recent history.
As Arsenal travel to San Siro yet again, in a few days time, in another epic Champions League encounter, it remains to be seen, if somebody from the Red and White ranks, is capable grabbing the headlines one more time.
