Fluminense in talks to sign Thiago Silva

Thiago Silva has been linked with a move away from Chelsea in recent months, he could be closing in on her return to former club Fluminense.

A report from Jorge Nicola has claimed that Thiago Silva is currently in talks with Fluminense regarding a return next year.

The veteran Brazilian defender has been linked with Saudi Arabian clubs as well. He has been a useful servant for Chelsea since joining the club. But the veteran defender is in his twilight years and he will have to be replaced soon.

Chelsea should look to invest in a quality young central defender and let Silva move on. A return to Fluminense would be ideal for the experienced defender at this stage of his career. So, their interest in re-signing the Chelsea mainstay is understandable.

He has proven himself in European football with the likes of AC Milan, PSG and Chelsea. There is no doubt that he has been a world-class defender over the years but that he is clearly on the decline and a move back to Brazil would be ideal for him.

Chelsea have recently invested in a number of quality young defenders, and it remains to be seen whether they can replace him adequately. Apart from his quality as a defender, Silva has added experience and leadership qualities to the dressing room. Replacing him will be a tricky challenge for the Blues.

Chelsea had a disappointing 2022/23 campaign, and they will be hoping to get back into the UEFA Champions League. It remains to be seen whether Mauricio Pochettino can guide his side back into the top four. Signing a quality replacement for Silva without qualifying for the Champions League will be an uphill challenge.

Meanwhile, the 39-year-old defender will be hoping to end his career on a high, and winning a trophy with prominence in the coming seasons would certainly be a dream ending to a glittering career.

A move back to Brazil could prolong his career at this stage and help him perform at a reasonably high level for a few years. Furthermore, returning to his homeland would allow him to be close to his family and enjoy the final years of his football career as well.
