Gary Lineker tips Xabi Alonso to manage Real Madrid, Liverpool

Football pundit Gary Lineker believes that Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso could become the manager of Real Madrid or Liverpool.

Gary Lineker has recently talked about the future of Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso on The Rest Is Football podcast. The popular pundit feels Alonso will soon take charge of one of the biggest clubs in world football. He feels he could become the manager of Real Madrid or Liverpool in the near future.

Alonso has had a very successful start to his managerial career. After having an illustrious playing career where he featured for Real Madrid, Liverpool and Bayern Munich, the 41-year-old decided to retire back in 2017.

A year later he started coaching the Real Madrid youth team and soon he was managing the Real Sociedad B team. Midway through the 2022/23 season, he was appointed as the manager of Bayer Leverkusen, and the former Liverpool midfielder has done wonders so far at the Bundesliga club.

He has led them in 52 matches and averages two points per game. In the ongoing season, his team is sitting top of the Bundesliga table. They are two points clear of defending champions Bayern Munich and have been unbeaten so far, having won nine out of their opening 10 league games.

His impressive performances have attracted a lot of attention. And, despite having well over two years left on his deal with the Bundesliga club, he has often been linked to his former clubs Liverpool, Bayer Munich and Real Madrid.

According to Lineker, he could soon take up the job at Liverpool or Real Madrid. The 62-year-old feels that Alonso is ready for the big job and his amazing start suggests he could be an ideal fit for the clubs. He has backed the former Spanish international to replace Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid or even take over from Jurgen Klopp once he decides to part ways with the Reds.

Lineker said via The Rest Is Football podcast, “I would think there is every chance that once Carlo Ancelotti walks away or is pushed out, as is often the case at Real Madrid, he might end up there as manager of a certain Jude Bellingham. Or he could also possibly follow Klopp down the line. These things you always do!”

Ancelotti has been linked with the Brazil national team job, and his contract runs out after the end of the season. As a result, there is a real possibility that Alonso could take charge of his former club next season. But, there are other options available as well, and even Ancelotti could carry on, although that will depend on Real Madrid’s performance in the ongoing season.

As far as the Liverpool job is concerned, the 41-year-old will have to wait a few more years because Klopp is unlikely to part ways with the Merseyside club any time soon. He is rebuilding the Reds and is expected to be in charge for a few more years.
