Andy Cole has slammed the performances of Antony, who cost Manchester United a substantial amount of money last year.
Antony has not been able to live up to the expectations since joining Manchester United, and he put in another mediocre performance against Newcastle United last night. Former Manchester United star and club legend Andy Cole has now slammed his performance in the defeat to Newcastle United.
Manchester United paid £85 million for the Brazilian international last year, and he is yet to register a single goal contribution for them this season. The Red Devils crashed out of the Carabao Cup after a 3-0 defeat against Newcastle United on Wednesday night.
Andy Cole has now claimed that the Brazilian international does not score enough goals or create enough chances for his teammates. The former Manchester United striker also questioned about what the 23-year-old actually offers to the side.
“He would drive me absolutely mad,” Cole told Sky Sports before adding, “He’s an individual, we all know he’s very left-footed, he’s an individual who never goes to the right-hand side so as a centre-forward, if you’re making a run to the near post you know you’re never going to get it.”
“He’s going to check back, you’re not sure when he’s going to put it in the box. He doesn’t score enough goals for me, he doesn’t create enough chances for his teammates. So you look at that and say, ‘Okay, what are you giving?’ That’s what you’re expecting from him. They’ve spent a hell of a lot of money on him, the manager’s backed him and he’s found it really, really tough.”
It is evident that the transfer has not worked out for the Red Devils, and it will be interesting to see if Manchester United decide to cash in on him at the end of the season. Jadon Sancho is in a similar situation, and the £73 million signing has not been able to live up to the expectations since his move from Borussia Dortmund.
Manchester United are in desperate need of quality wingers, and it will be interesting to see if the likes of Antony and Sancho can step up in the coming months. Meanwhile, Antony has had problems off the pitch as well. The recent accusations of domestic violence led to Manchester United giving him some time off.
