Barcelona might look to sign 27-year-old Spanish wide man Alfonso Pedraza from Villarreal in the 2024 summer transfer window.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Alfonso Pedraza is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The reigning La Liga champions are scouring the market for a left-back ahead of the 2024 summer transfer window. And the 27-year-old Villarreal star has emerged as a target for the Blaugrana.
Alfonso Pedraza took some time to establish a foothold at Villarreal. After graduating from the Valencian club’s youth division, he embarked on loan spells in England and Spain. But the Spaniard has not looked back since becoming a regular for the Yellow Submarine in the 2020/21 season.
Pedrasa has been the first-choice left-back for Villarreal for most of the last three seasons. Meanwhile, he has turned out ten times this term, chipping in with two assists. The 27-year-old is also a popular figure in the transfer market, with Barcelona among his prospective suitors.
Xavi Hernandez has a long-term left-back solution in his squad, with Alejandro Balde coming leaps and bounds in the last 12 months. But the Barcelona manager is a firm believer in having two quality options for every position. So, with Marcos Alonso facing an uncertain future at the Catalan club, a new left-back has become a necessity.
While Alonso is resisting calls for a departure from Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys in the January transfer window, he might not remain a Barcelona player beyond next summer. So, it behoves Barcelona to invest in a top-notch left-back in the 2024 summer transfer window. Several candidates, including Javi Galan, have thus emerged on Barcelona’s radar.
But Alfonso Pedraza is also a viable target for the reigning La Liga champions. The 27-year-old Spanish defender is well-settled in La Liga and can reprise any role on the left flank. So, he should not take long to establish a foothold at FC Barcelona while giving Xavi different options to utilise him.
Persuading Villarreal to part ways with the Spaniard might be a tall order. However, the opportunity to turn out for Barcelona can be tempting. So, it will be interesting to see if Pedraza continues his career at the Catalan club in the 2024/25 season.
