La Liga champions Barcelona have reportedly asked about 20-year-old Argentine prospect Federico Redondo, who wants to join Real Madrid.
According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Federico Redondo is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The reigning La Liga champions have submitted an enquiry for the 20-year-old midfield prospect. But the Argentinos Juniors man is waiting for an approach from Real Madrid to move to Europe.
Federico Redondo is the son of Real Madrid and Argentine legend Fernando Redondo. His father was a formidable holding midfielder who began his career at Argentinos Juniors. And the Argentine whizkid has followed in his father’s footsteps, graduating from the Argentinos Juniors Academy.
The 20-year-old made his first-team debut for Argentinos Juniors in July 2022 and has come leaps and bounds since then. Redondo has been a mainstay at the back for his team this season, turning out 39 times thus far while chipping in with one goal and two assists. Meanwhile, Redondo’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of Barcelona.
Barcelona’s interest in Redondo is understandable, considering they have yet to sign a long-term successor to Sergio Busquets. The Catalan giants bolstered their midfield unit in the summer transfer window by signing Oriol Romeu and Ilkay Gundogan. But both players are on the wrong side of 30 and will only be short-term solutions for the Blaugrana.
So, it behoves Barcelona to scour the market for a holding midfielder, with Redondo emerging as a viable target. And the reigning La Liga champions have asked about the 20-year-old Argentine prospect. In addition, he is also the subject of an enquiry from Ajax. But the young midfielder is waiting for an approach from Real Madrid.
It is unclear if Real Madrid will launch the offensive to sign Redondo anytime soon. The Merengues have two midfielders capable of reprising the holding midfield role. So, Real Madrid might not need to sign a defensive midfielder anytime soon. Nonetheless, the youngster has his heart set on representing Los Blancos, as his father did several years ago.
But unless the Merengues make a move to secure Redondo’s services, he will have to look elsewhere. So, Barcelona might have a glimmer of hope when they look to submit a bid to land him.
