Chelsea confident of agreeing new deal with Ian Maatsen

Chelsea are reportedly hoping to extend the contract of 21-year-old talented Dutch defender Ian Maatsen.

Recent reports have claimed that Chelsea want to extend the stay of Ian Maatsen at Stamford Bridge for weeks now. The Blues are now reportedly confident of securing an agreement with the player as per Football Insider.

The 21-year-old defender is highly rated at Stamford Bridge, and he has a bright future ahead of him. It is no surprise that Chelsea are looking to agree on a new contract with the player.

The left-back could be a key player for Chelsea in the coming seasons and must do everything in their power to keep him at the club for as long as possible. He is only 21 and will get better with coaching and experience.

Chelsea currently have Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella as their left-backs. While Chilwell has done a reasonably good job, Cucurella has been a major flop since his £62 million move from Brighton and Hove Albion. Chelsea need a quality left-back, and Maatsen could be the ideal solution along with Chilwell.

The 21-year-old defender will look to play regularly at this stage of his career. So, the Blues might need to provide him with game-time assurances in order to secure his long-term future. It will be interesting to see if Mauricio Pochettino can convince the player to put pen to paper on a new contract with the club.

Chelsea are one of the biggest clubs in the world, and the opportunity to stay at Stamford Bridge for the long term can be quite appealing for most players. However, Maatsen should focus on his development and sign an extension with Chelsea only if they are willing to provide him with a clear pathway to the first team.

The 21-year-old is an immense talent with a bright future ahead of him, and he cannot afford to sit on the bench at Chelsea for months. It will be interesting to see if the talented young defender is handed opportunities in the coming months.

Alternatively, Chelsea could look to sign an extension with him and send him out on loan so that he can get regular first-team action. Either way, the focus has to be the defender’s development over the next few months, and it remains to be seen how the situation unfolds.
